I have been very lucky to be invited to some great Shropshire Festivals this year. I love this type of work – big events always look great from the air but getting the right shots can be quite a challenge.
All my flights are weather dependent and strong winds are really scary. I don’t like flying in winds stronger than 15 mph as I can be blown away from the team and might not be able to fly back. Also water can damage my sensitive electronics so I stay on the ground when rain is forecast.
The sun can be a problem too – as any photographer will tell you shooting into the sun is not good, unless you want to create one of those arty type pics!
Then there are those pesky rules! It is against the law to fly over or within 150 metres of a gathering over over 1,000 people.
So before any flight my team has to find a location that is safe to take off at safe distance from the crowds and not facing into the sun. And of course while following the procedures in our “keeping everyone safe” post!
Here are pics and video from my 2017 festival flights:
Shropshire Kid’s Festival was held in the the Quarry Park. What an amazing location – the event is set in the loop of the River Severn with the beautiful town of Shrewsbury as a backdrop. See http://www.shropshirekidsfest.co.uk/ for more information.
Oswestry Charity Balloon Festival was held at the fantastic British Ironworks Centre. I was so privileged to be allowed to fly while the balloons launched, even though it entailed me getting out of my warm and cosy flight case at 6am! Shrewsbury Folk Festival is one of our favourite events and is held at the West Midland Showground. I have visited the festival several times before and am so happy that they have been using my photos on all their promotion media! See more about the festival at https://shrewsburyfolkfestival.co.uk/
